General base running guidelines
|
Always run hard.
Never make the 1st out or the 3rd out at 3rd base.
Always steal if the pitcher is in a wind up.
Be prepared to always steal on wild pitches and passed
balls.
For all line drives, runners need to wait for
the ball to get through the infield before running.
|
|
|
For all fly balls runners should hustle back to the base
and be in position to tag up.
Ground balls to the middle infielders that are playing
back - runner scores
Ground balls to the pitcher - Take an aggressive
secondary lead - if the pitcher does not fake the throw to
third base - runner scores.
Ground balls to 3rd or 1st - If the fielders are playing
back - Take an aggressive secondary lead - score if they throw
the ball to 1st base. Head back to the base if no throw is
made.
Ground balls to 3rd or 1st - If the fielders
are playing in - hold a mild lead - score on a bad throw.

|
|
On a single to right field, a runner on 1st goes to 3rd
base - unless the 3rd base coach signals to stop. (hint: run
hard around 2nd with the intention to go to 3rd, try to pick up
the 3rd base coach immediately after you touch 2nd base. If you
do not see or hear the coach keep running hard to 3rd base).
On a single to center field or left field
runner a runner should advance safely to 2nd base. Anticipate
poor throws from the outfield that create opportunities to
advance to 3rd base. Take advantage of defensive mistakes.
|
|
|
Runners are looking to score on any single
hit to the outfield.
For all fly balls to right field, runners
should hustle back to 2nd base and prepare to tag up to 3rd
base.
