Sunday June 1st 2008 Game 7 – L.I. Chiefs vs. Levittown North Stars

The Long Island Chiefs continued their winning streak, defeating the North Stars by the score of 10-4. In a repeating theme the Chiefs Defense was outstanding. Chris Duffy pitched an unbelievable 7 2/3 innings using 94 pitches. He baffled 30 batters, producing 7 K's, 1 base on balls, and gave up 4 runs on 6 hits. Phil Remi pitched 1 and 1/3 innings in relief. He faced 4 batters, letting up no runs, no hits, no base on balls, and 1 K, on 8 pitches. Chris and Phil pitched a gem.

Defense

It's a bird, it's a plane, no it's Jame Agolia. In the first inning James “Superman” Agolia made yet another classic flying catch in left center field, and for good measure did it again in the 4th inning in short center field, robbing 2 hits from the North Stars. The Chiefs extinguished the stars final threat in the 7th inning. With a man on 3rd Jeremy “I got game” Baldwin stole a base hit from the stars with an athletic twisting, jumping catch in the hole at shortstop and then tossed it over to Brandon LiVecchi covering 3rd base for 6:5 double play. wo ha. 1st Baseman AJ Mastroanni was the cog to the chiefs error free defense, scooping errant throws and completing the plays for outs. Nice work AJ.

Running

On the base path James showed that he is in fact faster than a speeding bullet - when he basically turned a routine walk into a stand up triple. He simply sprinted to first and never stopped running until he reached 3rd base. Awesome job James. The most unpredictable play would have to go to Phil Remi, who stole home after being caught in a rundown on the 3rd base line...cycling at least 7 times. The play lasted so long that coach Ruvio actually ran out of advice, coach Cummings made a stock trade, and coach Darren called home to catch up on the Yankee game. Awesome effort Phil.

Offense

The Chiefs offense was led by Mike Ruvio with 4 hits followed by AJ Mastroanni with 3 hits. James Agolia, Brandon LiVecchi, and Jeremy Baldwin each had 2 hits. Donald Grupski and Phil Remi had 1 apiece.

Brenden Cummings is on the DL.

Sunday May 4th 2008 Game 5 – L.I. Chiefs vs. Garden City Sharks

The Long Island Chiefs harpooned the Garden City Sharks 7 – 1 improving their record to 4 wins and 1 loss. The Chiefs’ defense continues to dazzle spectators, stifle opponents, and excite parents. With one word, Coach Bobby Cummings summed up today’s defensive effort - “Amazing!” The Sharks set an aggressive offensive tone to the game in the early innings only to have their frozen rope line drives caught for outs. Phil Remi started the defensive stand stifling a shot down the hot corner. James Agolia, with the ESPN play of the week, made a diving catch in center field and converted the effort into a double play (Nice concentration James!). Jeremy Baldwin with the web cam play of the day, made an unbelievable diving grab deep behind 2nd base for a 6-4 put out. The Wyatt Russo (c) and Chris Duffy (p) battery kept Shark batters off balance throughout the game sending the goose egg to the 7th inning (28 batters, 4Ks, 5 hits, 0 runs). The offense was powered by Don Grupski (3RBIs), Chris Duffy (HR), and Sean Kilcullen(1 RBI). Brenden Cummings (Hip) and Brandon LiVecchi (Thumb) are on the DL.

Sunday April 27th 2008 Game 4 – L.I. Chiefs vs. LSW Red

The Long Island Chiefs bounced back to their winning ways by defeating LSW Red 12 – 1. The Chiefs’ played outstanding defense yielding only 1 error. Phil Remy highlighted the defensive effort at 2nd base with the ESPN play of the week (Nice catch Phil). Strong pitching performances by Chris Duffy (20 batters, 2 Ks , 2 BB) and Phil Remy (4 batters, 1 k, 0 BB) solidified the defense. After the 2nd inning it looked like the Chiefs offensive woes would continue. The Chiefs loaded the bases with 1 out, Brandon LiVecchi hit a sharp one hopper that ricocheted off base runner Chris Duffy’s leg for the 2nd out (The Rule states that the runner is out and the base runners cannot advance). The inning ended with the Chiefs leaving the bases loaded and zero runs. Eventually the Chiefs offensive broke out in a big way led with a 12 run 10 hit attack. James Agolia sealed the victory with his speed, escaping a 3rd – home run down for the final run of the game. Brenden Cummings is out on the DL with a leg injury. Get well soon!

Sunday April 20th 2008 Game 3 – L.I. Chiefs vs. Bellmore Bulls

The Long Island Chiefs took one on the chin Sunday, stalling their spring record to 2-1 with a 12- 4 defeat against the Bellmore Bulls. The Chiefs had gutsy pitching performances by Don Grupski, Phil Remy, and Sean Kilcullen and two stellar unassisted double plays by the infield. Plagued by the wind, and bad luck, the Chiefs could not overcome the early 4 run deficit.
